Since launching in November 2009, the Paris airports Orly and Roissy CDG have set up 27 PARAFE airlock gates, in departure and arrival areas. This modern system quickly proved to be a success. In its 2 years of existence, more than 100,000 people have registered and more than 800,000 passengers have been recorded. This success is expected to grow. Since April 2012, holders of French biometric passports no longer need to register on the national PARAFE database. Passengers holding passports having the word “passport” underlined on the cover (those issued after June 2009) may immediately use PARAFE. By going directly to the PARAFE airlock gates and following the instructions, they can cross the border in 20 seconds. Other passengers holding electronic passports and European nationals must continue to register.
